Tourists arrested after an electric bicycle battery exploded at a Sydney hostel

Two tourists have been arrested on suspicion of detonating the battery of a defective electric bicycle at a hostel in Sydney, Australia, reports the The guard.

One person was injured and 70 had to leave the unit due to the fire, believed to be caused by a lithium battery, which required the intervention of 22 firefighters supported by six vehicles.

Authorities released footage of the moment the two tourists were caught in a fireball when a lithium-ion battery exploded at the hostel.

Security camera footage released by FRNSW shows a French tourist standing by the door talking to a friend (still in the room) when a device suddenly exploded.

They then both desperately ran to a safe place before going to a police station to ask for help.

One of the men, in his twenties, suffered minor burns to his leg and was taken to hospital. The other, identified by Nine news like Philippe, he said he was “shocked”. “I’m doing well, I’m lucky to be here intact,” he said.
