The seven missile tests conducted by North Korea in recent weeks were “tactical nuclear” exercises, state television KCNA reported, which said they were personally overseen by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and served as “a serious warning to enemies”.
North Korean military units involved in the “Tactical nuclear weapons operations conducted military exercises from September 25 to October 8 to verify and assess the country’s war deterrence and nuclear counter-attack capability, serving as a dire warning to enemies.”
According to KCNA, “Kim Jong-un, general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea and chairman of the Central Military Commission, led the military exercises at the site.”
Pyongyang fired two ballistic missiles into the sea in the early hours of Sunday, according to Seoul, marking the seventh launch in two weeks.
The latest test came hours after a US aircraft carrier completed joint military exercises with Seoul and Tokyo off the Korean peninsula, infuriating Pyongyang, which it sees as rehearsals for an eventual invasion.
