The coup within the Republicans culminated in the removal of House leader Kevin McCarthy, paralyzing not only Congress but also throwing the party itself into chaos. In office for less than nine months, one of the shortest terms in more than a century, McCarthy became embroiled in an insurrection led by Congressman Matt Gaetz, who came from the far right wing of the Republican Party. He was joined by seven more rebels, in addition to the entire Democratic bench. There were 216 votes in favor of the resolution to impeach McCarthy, down from 210.
