Ukraine: in Bakhmout, in the east, Ukrainian mortars try to repel the Russian army

In eastern Ukraine, shelling is constant. Mortar launchers, an elite body of Ukrainian infantry, harass Russian soldiers despite the danger.

In Bakhmout, in eastern Ukraine, the bombs are falling like rain. Already bruised a few months ago, this city in the heart of Donetsk Oblast is once again the object of clashes between Russians and Ukrainians. And in recent days, Vladimir Putin’s army has been gaining ground.

In a secret place, a few kilometers from the front line, the Ukrainian response is being prepared. Once the Russian positions are detected, the Ukrainian soldiers are on the move: the mortar launchers, the elite corps of the Ukrainian infantry, harass the enemies despite the danger.

“This morning we received a gift from Putin… A piece of shrapnel… we were lucky it didn’t go far!” says a soldier into the BFMTV microphone.

“You only have… 4 or 5 seconds to save your life”

In the region, the bombardments are constant. And because their vehicles are prime targets for the Kremlin army, the unit is forced to take cover on the road before returning to their battle station.

“If you hear a whistle in the sky, it means you have to run very fast. You only have… 4 or 5 seconds to save your life”, explains one of the soldiers.

Enemy infantry, armor and artillery… once the firing point is reached, the Ukrainian Army targets are radioed to the unit, which has only a few minutes to fire as many shells as possible. Because the mortars are exposed.

“The drones can detect us. They can also detect the sounds… Here we run the risk of dying,” summarizes one of the soldiers.
