September was the warmest month on record by an “extraordinary” margin

Europe’s Copernicus Observatory announced on Thursday that last month was the warmest September on record, beating 2020’s record by an “extraordinary” margin.

“September 2023 was the warmest September on record globally,” beating the previous record set in 2020 by an “extraordinary” margin and continuing a string of global monthly records that started in June, Copernicus revealed in a monthly report.

With a global average surface temperature of 16.38 degrees Celsius, the month of September was an “unprecedented anomaly”, surpassing the record of the ninth month of 2020 by a margin of 0.5 degrees Celsius.

September 2023 was “1.75 degrees Celsius warmer than the average September in the period 1850-1900,” before the effects of greenhouse gas emissions on the climate were recorded, Copernicus said.

On the other hand, the global average temperature since January is the warmest ever recorded in the first nine months of a year: 1.4 degrees Celsius above the climate in the 1850s-1900s and closer than ever to the Accord’s most ambitious limit of Paris (1.5 degrees Celsius in several years).

“This extreme month” of September “has given 2023 the dubious honor of topping the rankings, on track to become the hottest year, surpassing average temperatures of the pre-industrial era by about 1.4 degrees Celsius,” Copernicus Climate Change Service Deputy Director Samantha Burgess said in a statement.
