The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on Thursday expressed his “sincere condolences” to the families and friends of two Portuguese who died in a traffic accident in Venice, Italy on Tuesday.
“When President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa learned of the existence of two compatriots among the victims of the tragic traffic accident in Venice, he expresses his sincere condolences to their families and friends,” revealed the presidency of the republic in a note published on its website.
The Portuguese Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday evening that two Portuguese were killed and one injured in the bus crash on Tuesday evening in the Venice region of northeastern Italy, which left 21 dead.
The Foreign Ministry also stressed that it “regrets what happened and, through the Portuguese Embassy in Rome, is monitoring the situation.”
According to the Italian media, the mayor of Venice announced late Wednesday afternoon: the nationality of all victims of the bus accident: nine Ukrainians, four Romanians, three Germans, two Portuguese, one Italian [o motorista]a Croat and a South African.
Venice authorities have asked the Italian government to declare three days of mourning in the region over the deaths of 21 people in a bus that fell from a viaduct.
In addition to 21 deaths, the accident caused at least 15 injuries.
The bus passengers were mainly young foreign tourists returning to Venice from a nearby campsite.
The vehicle was an electric bus that caught fire after falling from a height of about 15 meters, knocking over the protection of the overpass.
