The Ukrainian president asked the leaders of some 50 European countries this Thursday for “a defensive shield for the winter” against Russia, in the face of different types of attacks, highlighting the need to “save the unity of Europe.”
“Russia will attack us with information, disinformation, among other things, that is why it is important that Ukraine has a defense shield for the winter,” said Volodymyr Zelensky.
Upon arrival at the third summit of the European Political Community, which is being held in the Spanish city of Granada, the Ukrainian president stressed that “in winter there will be many attacks from different sides and different types of Russian missiles, including drones with uranium.” , etc.”.
For this reason, “the main challenge we all face is to save the unity of Europe and I am not referring only to the EU countries, but to all of Europe,” said Volodymyr Zelensky.
Nearly 50 leaders of European countries meet this Thursday in Granada to debate the future of the continent at another summit of the European Political Community, a forum created in 2022, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The meeting is organized by the Spanish presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), which takes place during the second half of this year, and takes place on the eve of an informal meeting, also in Granada, of the European Council. where the leaders of the 27 countries of the community bloc are sitting.
The objective is that the Granada debates between European leaders lay the foundations for the European future, the Europe that is intended for the next decade.
The meeting of the European Political Community will be attended by delegations from around 50 countries, including the 27 EU countries and the presidents of the Commission and the European Council, Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel, respectively.
The meeting will have three axes of debate, around which round tables of leaders present will be held, in sessions closed to the media.
These three axes are digitalization and, in particular, the challenges and benefits of Artificial Intelligence; energy and environment; and multilateralism.
The meeting will end with a joint statement to journalists from the host, the current President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, from the next host, the leader of the British Government, Rishi Sunak, and from the previous one, the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu. .
Ukraine is one of the countries of the European Political Community and, like other states of this community, is a formal candidate for joining the EU.
The enlargement of the EU is precisely one of the topics on the table at this week’s summits in Granada.
This will be the third meeting of the European Political Community, an intergovernmental forum to debate political and strategic issues related to the future of Europe created after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and an idea launched by French President Emmanuel Macron.
