The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday to Iranian activist and journalist Narges Mohammadi, “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and for her struggle to promote human rights and freedom for all.” She is in custody and is currently serving a ten-year prison sentence.
“Narges Mohammadi is a woman, a human rights defender and a freedom fighter. Her courageous fight for freedom of expression and the right to independence came at enormous personal cost. The regime in Iran has detained her thirteen times, convicted her five times and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes. the Norwegian Commission recalled.
With this award, the committee also wants to draw attention to “the hundreds of thousands of people who have demonstrated against the regime in recent years”, during the protests following the death of the young Mahsa Amini at the hands of the police, due to the alleged misuse of the Islamic veil.
This year there were 351 applications.
The winner was announced in Oslo, Norway, in a context where the war in Ukraine has been going on for almost 19 months and the international community is highly fragmented.
All other categories of these prizes are announced in Stockholm, Sweden, but the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, headed by Berit Reiss-Andersen.
In 2022, the prize was awarded to Ales Bialiatski, from Belarus, and the human rights organizations Memorial, from Russia, and the Center for Civil Liberties, from Ukraine.
The Nobel Peace Prize ceremony will take place on December 10 (the day of Alfred Nobel’s death) in Oslo. Mohammadi is being held and is unlikely to attend. The winner receives a gold medal, a diploma and a cash prize of 11 million Swedish crowns, just under 950 thousand euros.
