Biden challenges Iran to “immediately” release Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi

US President Joe Biden urged Tehran this Friday to “immediately” release Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who is imprisoned in Iran.

The activist “has endured repeated arrests, persecution and torture at the hands of the Iranian regime, but her fight and determination have only grown stronger,” Biden said in a statement.

“This award is a recognition that, although she is currently unjustly detained in Evin Prison, the world still hears Narges Mohammadi’s voice calling for freedom and equality,” she added.

Biden stressed that the Iranian population rejects being silenced or intimidated in their battle for a democratic future and noted that the United States will continue to support their ability to defend those values.

As part of these efforts, Biden said, Washington will continue to lead diplomacy at the United Nations to “highlight, condemn and promote accountability for Iran’s abuses.”

Before Biden, the US envoy to Iran, Abram Paley, praised the bravery of the Iranian activist.

“Narges Mohammadi is a hero to so many people in Iran and around the world. Today, the entire world is united in recognizing her courage,” said the US envoy on the social network X (formerly Twitter), in reaction to the granting of the prize. the reward.

The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded today to the Iranian activist, in the name of the “struggle of women in Iran against oppression”, as announced by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

According to the committee, the election of this activist, vice president of the Center for Human Rights Defenders, was also due to “her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all.”

This is the fifth time in its 122-year history that the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to someone who is in prison or under house arrest.

In recent years, the Tehran regime has detained Narges Mohammadi 13 times. The activist has been convicted five times and is currently serving a 16-year prison sentence.

The Iranian Government condemned the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Mohammadi and described it as a “political act” and a measure of “pressure” by the West that, in its opinion, contributes to “economic and inhuman terrorism” which, it claims, Iran has suffered “for more than four decades.”
