Zelenskiy: Russia will try to destroy Ukraine’s electrical system this winter

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned on Friday that Russia will try to destroy his country’s power grid this winter, as it did last year when it stepped up massive attacks on vital infrastructure.

“This winter, Russian terrorists will again try to destroy our electrical system,” the Ukrainian head of state emphasized in his usual daily evening message on social media.

Zelensky assured that the Ukrainian authorities are “fully aware of the danger.”

The official added that the Ukrainians are preparing to “protect installations for the production and supply of electricity and heat, and repair everything damaged by the attacks.”

“It is very important to win this winter, overcome all difficulties and guarantee the protection of our people,” Zelensky underlined.

Last winter was marked by a wave of Russian bombings on Ukrainian infrastructure, regularly plunging millions of people into cold and darkness.

Zelenskiy revealed on Thursday that he has received “clear agreements” from the Europeans to obtain new anti-aircraft systems, as Kiev has been demanding for months.

Also this Thursday, the Ukrainian president asked the leaders of about fifty European countries for “a defensive shield for the winter” against Russia, given the different types of attacks, emphasizing the need to “save the unity of Europe”.

“Russia will attack us with information and disinformation, among other things. That is why it is important that Ukraine has a defense shield for the winter,” Volodymyr Zelensky said upon arrival at the third summit of the European Political Community in the Spanish city of Grenada.

The military offensive that Russia launched in Ukraine on February 24, 2022 caused the worst refugee crisis in Europe since World War II (1939-1945), according to the most recent UN data.

The Russian invasion – justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was condemned by most of the international community, which responded by arming Ukraine and impose economic sanctions on Russia.
