Brazil calls emergency meeting of the UN Security Council

Brazil, which presides over the UN Security Council, announced this Saturday that it will call an “emergency meeting” of that United Nations body in the face of the serious escalation of violence between Israel and the Palestinian territories.

“In its capacity as president of the United Nations Security Council, Brazil will call an emergency meeting of the organization,” said the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an official statement, cited by the EFE agency.

Israel declared a state of war after Palestinian militias in Gaza, led by the Islamic movement Hamas, launched an unprecedented surprise operation, launching more than a thousand rockets and infiltrating Israeli territory.

The offensive has so far left at least 40 dead and more than 700 injured in Israel, after a series of attacks carried out by land, sea and air from Gaza, according to an Israeli medical source.

Meanwhile, at least 198 Palestinians were killed and more than 1,600 injured in Israeli bombings in the Palestinian enclave, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The Brazilian government condemned the “bombings and ground attacks” and insisted that “there is no justification for resorting to violence, especially against civilians.”

In this sense, he urged the parties to “exercise maximum restraint to avoid further escalation” of the conflict.

“Brazil regrets that in 2023, the year of the 30th anniversary of the Oslo Peace Accords, there will be a serious and growing deterioration in the security situation between Israel and Palestine,” said the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The government of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also reiterated its commitment to resolving the conflict, within mutually agreed upon and internationally recognized borders.

He also stressed that “the mere management of the conflict does not constitute a viable alternative” for the definitive resolution of the “Palestinian-Israeli issue, and the resumption of peace negotiations is urgent.”
