This shooting in Egypt occurs at a time when Israel and Palestinian militants clash, following the surprise attack launched on Saturday by the Palestinian Islamic movement Hamas against Israeli territory.
Egypt reached peace with Israel decades ago and has long served as a mediator in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, anti-Israel sentiment is strong in the country, especially during episodes of violence.
Under the name “Al-Aqsa Storm”, the Hamas operation involved the launching of thousands of rockets and the incursion of armed militiamen by land, sea and air.
In response, Israel bombed several Hamas facilities in the Gaza Strip from the air, in an operation it called “Iron Swords.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israel is “at war” with Hamas, which has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007.
More than 300 Israeli citizens were killed in the Hamas offensive and at least 300 people were also killed on the Palestinian side, according to official sources from both parties.
