Pope Francis called this Sunday for “the end of weapons” in the Middle East and reinforced, at the end of the Angelus prayer in the Vatican, that “war is a defeat.”
“I follow with fear and pain what is happening in Israel, where violence is spreading very quickly, causing hundreds of deaths and injuries,” said the head of the Catholic Church, expressing “solidarity with the families of the victims and with all those of us who are living hours of terror and anguish”.
Before more than 10,000 faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican, Francis asked that “we put an end to weapons” and that “we understand that terrorism and war are not a solution.”

“War is a defeat,” he concluded.
The Islamic group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israeli territory this Saturday, called Operation “Al-Aqsa Storm”, with the launch of thousands of rockets and the incursion of armed militiamen by land, sea and air.
At least 300 people died in Israel after the attack by the Islamic movement Hamas, while at least 313 Palestinians died as part of the Jewish State’s strong air counteroffensive on Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israel is “at war” with Hamas.
