Two climbers dead and two missing after avalanche on Mount Shishapangma

Two climbers died, one was seriously injured and two others disappeared after an avalanche on Shishapangma Mountain, located in the Chinese autonomous region of Tibet, local press reported this Monday.

The avalanche occurred on Saturday afternoon at an altitude of 7,600 meters, rescue services reported, cited by the official Chinese newspaper Global Times.

The dead are an American and a Nepalese. The missing also belong to these nationalities, while the injured climber is Nepalese.

Rescue teams went to the scene of the accident to organize the search for the two missing climbers, while climbing activities remain suspended.

Shishapangma is one of the 14 mountains in the world that exceed 8,000 meters in height – there are 8,027 – and the only one in this category whose surface is located entirely within Chinese territory.

Since 2002, climbing mountains over 7,000 meters in the Asian country requires authorization from the General Administration of Sports of China, which requires the presentation of a prior plan and certificates of physical fitness and experience, among other requirements.
