Biden asked questions about confidential documents found in private locations

The US president was questioned as part of the investigation into a series of confidential official documents found in a former office as well as a family home, the White House said.

The questioning, described as voluntary, took place on Sunday and Monday, indicating that Joe Biden “and the White House are cooperating” with the investigation, led by special counsel Robert Hur, according to a statement released Monday.

In the same note, spokesperson Ian Sams assured that the presidency has, “where appropriate,” publicly provided “relevant updates, which are as transparent as possible and consistent with protecting and preserving the integrity of the investigation.”

In late 2022, a series of confidential documents, the exact number and contents of which remain unknown, were found in Joe Biden’s home in Delaware, in the eastern United States, and in his former office in Washington.

The documents date from Biden’s time as vice president (2009-2017) and the three decades the Democrat spent in the Senate, the upper house of the US parliament, during which he was closely involved in the country’s foreign policy.

The discovery of the documents embarrassed the White House, as emerged shortly after the case of more than 100 confidential documents found by the FBI in the mansion of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), in Mar-a-Lago (Florida ). .

U.S. law requires presidents and vice presidents to return all official documents, communications and other notes to the National Archives.

The White House and Biden have emphasized their full willingness to cooperate with the investigations and have sought to distance themselves from Trump’s case. The current president assured that he did not know he had these documents.

On January 12, Attorney General Merrick Garland moved forward with appointing conservative Robert Hur as special prosecutor to analyze papers classified as classified and found in private locations, including former Vice President Mike Pence’s home.

Pence’s case is very different from Trump’s, as the former vice president requested access to documents stored in his home once other documents were discovered in his former office.

The Justice Department is also trying to determine whether Trump, or anyone on his team, criminally obstructed the investigation by refusing to turn over the documents.

The situation forced the United States National Archives to ask all of the country’s former presidents and vice presidents to review their personal records to determine whether they have confidential documents.
