Anti-vaccination activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced on Monday that he will run as an independent president of the United States, which means he will drop out of the race for the Democratic nomination.
As a member of one of the most famous families in American politics, Kennedy was more popular among Republicans than Democrats.
It is unclear how this support from Republicans will manifest itself in an election in which Kennedy will also face Donald Trump.
In turn, Joe Biden’s allies have viewed Kennedy’s campaign in the primaries as not serious.
The announcement comes less than a week after activist Cornel West abandoned his Green Party candidacy in favor of an independent candidacy.
Figures from the far right and the anti-vaccination movement have been pointing to the possibility that Kennedy will abandon the Democratic Party for some time.
Despite identifying as a Democrat and regularly appealing to his father, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and his uncle, President John F. Kennedy, in his campaign, he has built strong ties with far-right figures in recent years.
