Ukraine says Russia used 83 missiles and 17 drones made by Iran

Russia used 83 missiles and 17 Iranian-made drones in the bombings carried out on Monday against several Ukrainian cities, according to a report by the Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defense, Hanna Maliar.

According to a spokesman for the Ukrainian air force, quoted by the Kyviv Independent newspaper, 43 of the launched missiles were shot down by Ukrainian anti-aircraft defenses.

Ukraine’s deputy defense minister also confirmed the use by Russian forces of 17 Iranian-made Shahed-type drones launched from Belarus and Crimea.

The missile launches against kyiv, Lviv, Pryluky, Khmelnytskyi, Dnipro, Nizhyn, Jitomyr and Kharkiv were carried out from the Caspian Sea and the regions of Nizhni Novgorod, a city located in western Russia, according to information provided by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. , quoted by the country’s media.

Large-scale Russian bombardments launched against Ukrainian cities have caused an undetermined number of deaths as the population seeks protection in shelters. In kyiv, authorities said, at least eight people were killed and 24 wounded.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a message to the Ukrainian people that the massive attacks in various regions of Ukraine are aimed at damaging the energy infrastructure and causing casualties among the civilian population.

“The morning has been difficult. We are dealing with terrorists. Dozens of missiles, Iranian Shahed. These have two goals,” Zelensky said.

The first target, indicated the Ukrainian president, is energy facilities throughout the country. The second, Zelensky added, “is the people,” stressing that “such a time and such targets were specially chosen to cause the greatest possible damage.”

The Shaded 136 (“witness” in Persian) drone is a remotely controlled unmanned aerial device developed by the HESA company and entered service in 2021.

With a radius of action of 2,500 kilometers, the “Shaded 136” are used exclusively for targeted attacks and the explosives they can carry detonate on impact with their target.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday threatened kyiv with “stronger” responses, such as today’s missile strikes, “if attempts to carry out terrorist attacks” continue on Russian territory.

The resurgence of these bombings comes after the explosion that on Saturday damaged a landfill in Crimea, a setback for Moscow’s fragile war logistics, which transports heavy military equipment and supplies to Russian troops in southern Ukraine through this infrastructure.

The attack on the bridge was described by Vladimir Putin as an act of terrorism on the part of kyiv.
