San Francisco police announced Monday that they had shot and killed a man whose vehicle entered the Chinese consulate in the city.
San Francisco Police Sergeant Kathryn Winters told reporters that “officers … came into contact with the suspect and officer-involved shootings occurred.”
The victim was pronounced dead at hospital despite the efforts of police and paramedics on the scene, he added, without providing any information on the victim’s identity.

A spokesperson for the Chinese consulate said in a statement that the suspect “forcibly entered the administration hall of the consulate, seriously threatening the lives of the staff and people there and causing serious damage” to the building.
“The suspect was arrested by the police,” said the same note, condemning the “violent attack” and calling for an investigation.
San Francisco police and the State Department are investigating the case, Winters said.
San Francisco has many residents of Chinese descent, many of whom are from Taiwan.
