The Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah today claimed responsibility for a rocket attack on northern Israel, which it said caused “a large number of casualties” among Israeli forces.
“The Mujahedin [combatentes] of the Islamic Resistance attacked the Zionist point of Al Khrdah, opposite the Al Dhiraa area, with guided missiles,” the Shiite movement said. in a statement cited by Spanish agency EFE.
According to the pro-Iranian group, the attack resulted in “a large number of confirmed casualties in the ranks of the occupying forces, including deaths and injuries.”
Hezbollah justified that it was taking revenge for the deaths of three of its militants in Israeli bombings on Monday.
After the attack, Israel bombed southern Lebanon, the official Lebanese agency ANI reported, without reporting any casualties.
The Israeli military said it was bombing Lebanese territory “in response to anti-tank missiles targeting Israeli soldiers.”according to the AFP agency.
An AFP journalist who was in the border area heard several loud explosions.
The Israeli military said it had received no reports of damage or injuries in the Hezbollah attack.
The attacks mark the start of the fourth consecutive day of hostilities in the border area.
Since Sunday, Hezbollah and Palestinian factions on Lebanese territory have fired several missiles and rockets at Israel.
Hezbollah warned that it will not hesitate to “respond decisively to Israeli aggression (…), especially if martyrs are involved.”
On Sunday, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for firing from Lebanon on Israeli positions, which has since become a daily occurrence, raising fears of the conflict spreading.
The escalation at the Israel-Lebanon border followed the unprecedented attack launched on Israel from the Gaza Strip by the Islamist group Hamas on Saturday.
Since then, the war between Israel and Hamas has left more than 1,200 dead on the Israeli side and 950 in Gaza, according to data updated today by both sides.
