Porto synagogue vandalized with “Free Palestine” inscriptions

The Porto synagogue was vandalized today with the inscriptions ‘Free Palestine’ on its wall and gate, following the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas, the Comunidade Israelita do Porto (CIP) said on Wednesday.

“The largest synagogue on the Iberian Peninsula was vandalized today. Those who hate Israel express their hatred against the local Jews,” the CIP said in a statement to Lusa, attaching photos proving the act of vandalism.

The gate of the synagogue reads “Free Palestine” and the walls read “End Israel’s apartheid”.

Porto’s PSP contacted Lusa and revealed that it had been on site to deal with the incident and investigate the situation.

Moreover, this police force has said that it will participate in the situation.

For its part, and also contacted by Lusa, the Porto City Council said that they had been cleaning the gate and the wall since noon.

The Palestinian Islamic group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israeli territory on Saturday, dubbed Operation ‘Al-Aqsa Storm’, with the launch of thousands of rockets and the incursion of armed militiamen by land, sea and air.

In response to the surprise attack, Israel bombed several Hamas facilities in the Gaza Strip from the air, in an operation it dubbed “Iron Swords”.

During the invasion of Israeli territory, Hamas took more than a hundred civilian and military hostages, who they took to the Gaza Strip.

Israel’s military response, which declared war on Hamas after the attack, caused the deaths of more than 900 people in Gaza, according to the latest reports.

On the Israeli side, a senior military official said the death toll was over 1,000.
