Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli opposition leader Benny Gantz agreed this Wednesday to form an emergency national unity government and a war cabinet, a joint official statement indicates.
Gantz, former defense minister and chief of staff of the Armed Forces, issued what he said was a joint statement with Netanyahu, in which he said the two would form a five-member “war management cabinet.”
In addition to Netanyahu and Gantz, the cabinet will also be made up of the current Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, and two other senior officials who will serve as “observer” members.
Under the agreement, the government will not pass any legislation or decisions unrelated to the war while fighting continues.
It is not yet clear what role Netanyahu’s current government partners, a group of far-right and ultra-Orthodox parties, will play.
