Putin calls for negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday called for negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, considering them still necessary to avoid an “extension of the conflict” that would have global consequences.

Putin called for concentrating “efforts on diplomacy to the detriment of the military aspect” in the search for solutions “to end the fighting as soon as possible”, in reference to the current Palestinian-Israeli conflict triggered by the Hamas attack on Saturday.

“Secondly, it is necessary to return to the negotiation process to find a solution “acceptable to all parties, including the Palestinians,” according to statements broadcast on television.

At the same time, he considered it necessary “to avoid the extension of the conflict at all costs, because if that happens there will be consequences for the international situation, and not only in the region.”

Putin noted that Russia, as a member of the Middle East Quartet, along with the United States, the European Union and the UN, and which has been assigned a mediation role, could “bring its own contribution to this resolution process.”

However, he defined the situation as extremely serious, admitting that “it is difficult to help in the resolution process.”

The day before, Vladimir Putin had considered the creation of an “independent and sovereign” Palestinian state “necessary.”

He also indicated that the conflict was a “clear example of the failure of United States policy in the Middle East.”

The Islamic movement Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israeli territory on Saturday, called Operation “Al-Aqsa Storm”, with the launch of thousands of rockets and the incursion of armed militiamen by land, sea and air.

In response to the surprise attack, Israel bombed several Hamas facilities in the Gaza Strip from the air, in an operation it called “Iron Swords.”

Israel today continued its devastating attacks against the Palestinian territory of the Gaza Strip, where Hamas has been in power since 2007.

The Israeli Army reported 1,200 deaths in Israel, most of them civilians, while in the Gaza Strip the figure rises to at least 1,055 deaths, also mostly civilians, according to local authorities, in addition to the hundreds of deaths among Hamas fighters. who infiltrated Israel.
