“In this dramatic situation, it would be irresponsible not to use all the contacts that can help,” declared the German leader before the Bundestag.
The German chancellor is scheduled to meet this Thursday with the emir of Qatar, someone who is seen as a possible intermediary between both parties.
Scholz also announced that he will prohibit, in his territory, all activities considered linked to Hamas.
This measure targets in particular an association whose members have expressed support for Hamas attacks against Israel.
“The Federal Ministry of the Interior will prohibit Hamas activity in Germany,” the Chancellor told German deputies.
“An association like Samidoun, whose members celebrate the most brutal terrorist acts in the streets, will be banned in Germany,” he said.
Hamas, in power in the Gaza Strip since 2007, launched a surprise attack on Israeli territory on October 7, under the name of operation “Al-Aqsa Storm”, with the launch of thousands of rockets and the incursion of rebels. armed by land. sea and air.
In response, Israel bombed several Hamas facilities in that Palestinian territory from the air, in an operation it called “Iron Swords.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the country is “at war” with Hamas, which has been internationally classified as a terrorist movement not only by Israel, but also by the United States, the European Union (EU) and other nations.
