Air defense intercepts rockets launched by Hamas against Sderot

This Thursday, Israeli military forces intercepted artillery rockets launched from the Gaza Strip against the city of Sderot, five kilometers from the territory controlled by the Islamist movement Hamas.

Several rockets fired from Gaza targeted the southern area of Sderot and forced the few civilians to seek refuge in a shelter.

At least one of the projectiles crossed the defense line and hit an inhabited residential area in the south of the city, causing damage, Lusa confirmed at the scene.

“The shooting (from Hamas) has been frequent and therefore it is necessary to be close to shelter,” a resident of southern Sderot told Lusa.

At around 11:30 a.m. (local time, 9:30 a.m. in Lisbon), and following field artillery fire from the Israel Defense Forces, a series of rockets were fired at the city, but most were apparently destroyed by Israel’s anti-aircraft defense. .

Even so, shrapnel from a rocket hit the garage of a residence, destroying a parked car.

Some neighbors took to the streets to check for possible damage to their roofs.

The houses remain inhabited but the population, composed mainly of Jews, avoids going out.

Israeli artillery is using the outskirts of the city to attack targets in Gaza, and constant gunfire is heard in a densely forested area.

Sderot was one of the Israeli towns targeted in a surprise attack by Hamas militants that killed more than 1,200 people, most of them civilians.

Operation “Al-Aqsa Storm” also included the launching of thousands of rockets into Israeli territory and the kidnapping of Israeli civilians, who were taken to Gaza.

Israel’s military response to the attacks has caused more than a thousand deaths in the Hamas-controlled area since 2007.
