The Socialists and Democrats (S&D) of the European Parliament (EP) decided to suspend the Social Democratic Directorate (Smer), a party to which the elected Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, belongs, known for his approach to the Kremlin and his positions against support for Ukraine. and Voice Social Democracy (HLAS).
In a statement, the S&D announced “support for the unanimous decision of the president of the Party of European Socialists to suspend the membership of the Slovak parties SMER and LHAS [Voz Social-Democracia]”.
The decision came in reaction to the creation of a coalition for the Government of Slovakia with the far-right Slovak National Party: “The memorandum of understanding signed between the three parties is not compatible with the values and progressive principles of the European family of socialists and Democrats.”
