British police divert plane after safety warning

British police surrounded a Kenyan Airways plane at London’s Stansted Airport on Thursday after a security alert. According to the airport, the plane is parked far from the terminal.

The Boeing-787 had taken off from Nairobi and was due to land at Heathrow Airport before being diverted to Stansted 45 minutes before landing.

Two Typhoon fighters reportedly intercepted the plane after being joined by French fighters. Britain’s Defense Secretary said the fighter jets had been activated this afternoon as a precaution to investigate a civilian aircraft approaching the United Kingdom.

An airport spokesman said the plane “landed safely in the presence of Essex Police”.

“The aircraft has been escorted to a remote parking area and normal flight operations are now continuing,” the spokesperson said.

It is believed the alarm was activated as the plane flew over French airspace.

The British Ministry of Defense stated that the investigation into this situation is now in the hands of civilian authorities.
