A Philadelphia police officer was shot and killed and a second officer was wounded Thursday night when they confronted car thieves at Philadelphia International Airport, the force said.
A person who was taken to a private hospital and died at the scene may have been involved in the shooting, but investigators have not confirmed it, Acting Police Commissioner John Stanford said at a late-night news conference.
John Stanford also claims that officers were on their way to work when they saw several people breaking into a vehicle in the parking lot.
As officers approached, “the suspects opened fire,” hitting one officer several times in the upper body and the other in the arm, he added.
An officer died shortly after 11:30 p.m. at a hospital. His name was not released, but he was 50 years old and had 22 years of service in law enforcement, Stanford said.
