“The priority is to calm the situation to avoid a serious humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza”

The Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi, considered this Monday a priority to “calm the situation” in Gaza to avoid a “serious humanitarian catastrophe”, during a telephone conversation with his Iranian and Turkish counterparts.

The dialogue is part of a round of conversations that the head of Chinese diplomacy has held in recent days with representatives of countries in the region, the United States and Europe.

“The priority at this time is to calm the situation to avoid a serious humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and the death of more innocent civilians, before this further compromises the peace process in the Middle East,” Wang said, quoted by the official agency. Xinhua News. .

During the conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Hosein Amir Abdolahian, the Chinese diplomat maintained that the right to self-defense must respect international humanitarian law and that responding to violence with more violence will only cause more damage and lead to “more serious” crises. “.

Wang conveyed to his Iranian counterpart China’s support for regional countries to strengthen their unity to “speak with one voice on the Palestinian issue.”

The Chinese minister stressed that the current situation is mainly due to the fact that the rights of the Palestinian people to have a State, to exist and to return have been postponed and ignored “for too long.”

China “will continue to stand on the side of peace and justice and support the just cause of the Palestinian people in safeguarding their national rights,” he added, reiterating its defense of the “two-state” solution.

The Chinese diplomat expressed himself in similar terms during his conversation with the Turkish minister, Hakan Fidan.

The head of Iranian diplomacy told Wang that his country hopes to resolve the crisis through political means and is willing to strengthen communication with China.

The Turkish Foreign Minister underlined Turkey’s view that it is necessary to avoid civilian casualties and displacement of people.

Fidan stated that a ceasefire is “imperative” and that any solution that does not include a “two-state solution” is unviable. He added that his country “does not accept the punitive measures imposed by Israel” on civilians in Gaza.

The conflict between Israel and the Islamic group Hamas has already caused at least 2,215 deaths and 8,714 injuries in the Gaza Strip, in addition to a humanitarian crisis due to Israeli bombings after the unprecedented attack carried out by Hamas on Israeli soil, which caused more than 1,300 dead, mostly civilians, and at least 120 kidnapped.
