In recent days, German police have received reports from residents in Berlin who found the Star of David painted or taped on the entrance to their home. German authorities fear that the safety of Jews in Berlin is threatened.
In the 1940s, the German Government decreed that all Jews must wear this star. The advisor of the Portuguese communities in northern Germany fears that, if German social policy is not improved, this conflict could increase social tension in the country. Alfredo Stoffel warns that a “powder keg” could be about to explode.
“If there is no peace in the region, probably in the medium term we will have a problem in Central Europe. We cannot forget the number of Muslims who live in Central Europe, both in Germany and in France, in Belgium, even in Spain, and within “These are extremist groups and that is where we have to be a little careful,” he says, speaking with TSF.
Asked whether the conflict in the Middle East could rekindle old tensions in Germany, Alfredo Stoffel points out that if the country “does not improve its social policy and does not act decisively against all those who do not want to recognize German law, we are all working for a powder keg”.
Alfredo Stoffel describes that in the suburbs of Berlin the fear of violence is even greater.
“The problem is not the tension that exists between Jews and Arabs. The problem that exists is the tension that exists between Arabs who do not accept the Western way of life and this is something that is more noticeable in the suburbs of the big city,” he says, giving the example of a neighborhood in Berlin.
“A large part of the population comes from Arab countries. German communal policy itself considers that big mistakes have been made, these mistakes have occurred since the mid-70s and early 80s, so we are talking about things that “They happened almost 50 years ago,” he explains.
The counselor of the Portuguese communities of northern Germany maintains, however, that these specific cases cannot have a single reading and maintains that German society in 2023 is not anti-Semitic.
“This type of graffiti should not exist and, as I said, it should be punished by law. It is a situation that cannot be done, we cannot look at German society as if German society, in itself, was an anti-Semitic society It is not. Germans want to live in peace, Germans recognize the value of diversity. We have to pay attention to those small groups that, outside the law, do things that they should not and that also denigrate the image of the German society itself,” he emphasizes.
The British newspaper The Telegraph writes that in recent days there have been at least four reports of people finding the Star of David taped or painted on the entrance to their homes. German police confirmed that one of the houses belonged to a Jew.
