She is Indian, but, as is appropriate here, her name is María. She belongs to a congregation founded by Mother Teresa of Calcutta and has been in Jerusalem for just over a year.
A week ago, you could barely walk in the Old City with so many people. Now the streets are empty, she tells the TSF.
“We see the empty roads; before they were full of pilgrims, now there is nowhere to go. There are people suffering everywhere, not just in Gaza.”

Sister Maria is desperate to hear from three nuns from her congregation who run a home housing 21 Palestinian children with disabilities in Gaza. They are trapped in a church with no possibility of leaving the conflict zone.
“They can’t come for the disabled children, how are they going to transport them?” he asks. “They can’t be taken anywhere, they can’t be eliminated and that’s the situation.”
Gazans are not completely alone, but those who care about them are often helpless.
