The European Union (EU) will open an air bridge with Egypt to send humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population of Gaza, who are facing a “disastrous” situation, the Commission announced on Monday.
In a statement, the European Commission acknowledged that the people of Gaza are experiencing a “disastrous humanitarian situation” following the “heinous terrorist attack” carried out against Israel by the Islamist movement Hamas on October 7, and the Israeli retaliation that followed.
“The Union will launch the ‘EU Humanitarian Airlift’ operation, which consists of several flights to Egypt to deliver essential supplies to humanitarian organizations on the ground in Gaza,” the European Commission said.
The EU continues to increase its emergency assistance to the Palestinian people.

This airlift “will facilitate the delivery of assistance to people in need in Gaza,” the European Commission says.
The first two flights of this airlift will take place this week and will carry UNICEF humanitarian cargo, including shelter items, medicines and hygiene kits.
“As announced by the President [da Comissão Europeia Ursula] Von der Leyen, the EU this weekend tripled its humanitarian aid to more than €75 million to support civilians in need in Gaza,” the statement said.
“Funding will be channeled through humanitarian partners, selected by the EU, operating on the ground, taking into account capacity and access,” the European Commission indicates.
