The suspect in the terrorist attack in Brussels that left two dead was arrested this Tuesday by Belgian authorities.
The Belgian press writes that it is a 45-year-old man of Tunisian nationality, Abdesalem Lassoued, who was in the country illegally after being tried in Tunisia for crimes related to terrorist activities.
Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden confirmed that Belgian police “neutralized” a suspect, shot by police during his arrest in a cafe in Schaerbeek, Brussels. According to The Brussels Times, the man ended up dying, information not confirmed by other sources.
Abdesalem Lassoued is the main suspect in the shooting death of two people in Brussels on Monday night because he posted a video on social media claiming to be the attacker and a member of the Islamic State.
After the attack, the suspect fled the scene and was pursued by authorities throughout the night.
Local media also claim that the victims are a Swedish couple, fans who were in the country to watch the Belgian and Swedish soccer teams play. A third person was injured but “is out of danger.”
A video spread on social networks shows a man with a firearm shooting in the middle of the street in the Molenbeek neighborhood. As people on the street flee, the shooter enters a building and at least three shots are heard.
On Monday, Belgian authorities raised the alert status to level 4, the highest on the scale that measures the risk of a terrorist attack. The Crisis Office asks that “useless trips be avoided.”
“This terrorist attack shakes the foundations of our peaceful societies,” said Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo in an early morning press conference, in which he began by sending, on behalf of Belgium, the “most sincere condolences to the people of Sweden.” .
