The man who killed a teacher in France on Friday published a video before the attack claiming the crime was committed in the name of the extremist group Islamic State, a source close to the case said on Tuesday.
In the video, Mohammed Mogouchkov, a 20-year-old Russian with a criminal record for radicalization, also makes a “very marginal” reference to the Islamist group Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel on October 7, the source added.
Mogouchkov murdered Dominique Bernard, a 57-year-old French teacher, on Friday at the school where he was a student in Arras, almost three years after the murder, in the Paris region, of teacher Samuel Paty, by another radical Islamist.
After the attack in Arras, the French government raised the alert level to an ‘attack emergency’, at a time of high tension over fears that the Middle East conflict would be imported into French territory, home to the largest Jewish community. .
After spending 96 hours in police custody, the perpetrator of the crime is due to appear this Tuesday at a hearing before an investigating judge for his indictment. A police source said Mogouchkov “has not given any explanation” so far.
