Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said on Tuesday that the country has never been as threatened as it is now, a day after two Swedes were killed and another injured in an attack in Brussels.
“Never in recent history have Sweden and Swedish interests been as threatened as they are today,” Kristersson said at a press conference.
“Everything indicates that it was a terrorist attack, targeting Sweden and Swedish citizens simply because they were Swedish.”Kristersson emphasizes, referring to the attack in Brussels.
The Swedish Prime Minister also confirmed that the suspect was killed during a Belgian police operation and that the person had “acted alone”.
According to Kristersson, the alleged perpetrator of the crime in Brussels was occasionally in Sweden, but added that the man – 45-year-old Tunisian Abdesalem L. – was not known to the Swedish police.
Sweden’s prime minister met with all the country’s party leaders on Tuesday to discuss the attack, the TT news agency reported.
Two people were shot dead and another was injured on Monday evening, the day the Belgian and Swedish national football teams played in Brussels. The football match did not resume after the break.
The Belgian Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office stated that the attacker, who was riding a motorcycle, followed some Swedish football fans who were getting into a taxi. He then opened fire on these people as they got out of the vehicle at an intersection.
One of the dead is Swedish, another is of Swedish descent, but also had a Swiss identity card. The third victim, seriously injured, is also of Swedish descent, according to Belgian federal prosecutor Frédéric Van Leeuw.
