Israel rejects the existence of a humanitarian crisis in Gaza

Israel denies the existence of a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, after the UN warned this Tuesday of the imminent risk of deaths from infections in Gaza due to the minimum water supply since the start of the war with Hamas.

“We have no commitment to supply electricity to Hamas. They attacked us,” Israeli defense forces spokesman Richard Hecht begins in an interview with the BBC.

“They have controlled the Gaza Strip for years, they have their own electricity. I also see water in the areas of Gaza, where we have asked people to leave, so there is no crisis at the moment,” he adds.

In an information update on the Gaza Strip, the UN states that Israel has so far authorized the supply of less than 4% of the water consumed by the population before the start of the war with the Islamist movement.

The risk of deaths from infections “is imminent if water and fuel are not immediately allowed into the Palestinian enclave,” said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Following the unprecedented attack by Hamas against Israeli territory, which caused more than 2,400 deaths on October 7, Israel announced the cutoff of water, electricity and fuel supplies to the Gaza Strip.
