Russia and the United Arab Emirates called on Tuesday for the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday, following an attack on a hospital in Gaza that left hundreds dead, according to local authorities.
“Russia and the United Arab Emirates have requested an open emergency meeting of the UN Security Council for tomorrow at 10:00 (local time, 15:00 in Lisbon), October 18, in relation to the missile attack against a hospital in Gaza,” announced Russia’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, on the X platform (formerly Twitter).
“We will see how our Western colleagues will react to this,” he added.
On Monday night, the UN Security Council rejected a draft resolution proposed by Russia calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to alleviate the plight of civilians in Gaza.
The United States, one of the countries that opposed the text, justified its position with the fact that the Russian draft resolution does not specifically condemn Hamas for the attack on Israel.
So far, the most powerful UN body, responsible for maintaining international peace and security, has been unable to take a position on the Hamas attack or Israel’s brutal response, with airstrikes that killed 2,750 Palestinians and one siege of Gaza.
