A synagogue and a Jewish community center in Berlin were attacked this Wednesday with Molotov cocktailsbut, according to local police, no victims or material damage were reported.
Police had officers stationed in the area for security reasons, but they were unable to intercept the attackers.
No group has claimed responsibility for the events, against which the Jewish community demands a forceful response.
“We trust that the German security forces will treat this case with the utmost severity,” said the Israeli embassy in Germany in a statement released this Wednesday, considering that the current moment is “decisive for any democracy.”
The embassy stressed that the incident occurred shortly after clashes between police and pro-Palestinian protesters were reported in several areas of Berlin.
Last weekend, a demonstration celebrated the “massacre of Israelis” following the surprise attack carried out by the Islamist group Hamas in Israel on October 7.
The demonstration generated outrage in Germany and led the Government to suspend demonstrations with anti-Semitic slogans and incitement to violence.
Last week, the Star of David (a Jewish symbol) also appeared painted on several buildings where Jews live.
“Anti-Semitism has no place in Germany,” said German Chancellor Olaf Sholz this Wednesday, in reaction to the attack on the synagogue and community center.
These attacks are “inhuman” and “cannot be tolerated,” he said, adding that the police have opened an investigation to clarify the incident that occurred in the Mitte neighborhood.
