Sakharov Prize awarded to Iranian Mahsa Amini

The 2023 Sakharov Prize was awarded this Thursday to the young Mahsa Amini, the young Iranian who died last year, and to the Women, Life, Freedom movement of Iran, the president of the European Parliament announced in Strasbourg. This award distinguishes the defense of human rights.

The decision was announced during the plenary session of the European Parliament, which is taking place in Strasbourg, France, after the presidents’ conference that brings together Roberta Metsola and the leaders of the political groups.

Masha Amini died on September 16, 2022, after being detained by Iranian customs police for not wearing the Islamic veil correctly, an episode that triggered unprecedented civic demonstrations against the theocratic regime in Tehran, which violently repressed the protests.

Iranian security forces imposed strong access restrictions to the cemetery where Amini is buried and where, the day after her death, the wave of civic protests began.
