US calls for Rafah crossing to remain open

This Saturday, the United States urged all parties involved in the Israel-Hamas conflict to leave the Rafah crossing open, after the first column of humanitarian aid entered the Gaza Strip from Egypt.

“We urge all parties to keep the Rafah crossing open so that essential aid to the people of Gaza can be delivered continuously,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who returned from a trip to the Gaza Strip, said in a statement. region. from the Middle East.

According to the UN, a column of 20 trucks with humanitarian aid, from Egypt, entered Gaza this Saturday, through the Rafah terminal, the only entrance to the territory that is not controlled by Israel.

“The opening of this essential supply route is the result of the full diplomatic involvement of the United States in the region and an agreement reached by President [Joe] Biden with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi during his recent historic visit to Israel on Wednesday, Blinken noted.

By welcoming this first humanitarian aid, the head of North American diplomacy left a warning. “We have been clear: Hamas must not interfere with the delivery of life-saving assistance. Palestinian civilian populations are not responsible for Hamas’s atrocious terrorism.”

The Rafah border had been closed since the start of Israeli bombing of Gaza, in retaliation for Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7.

The conflict has already caused thousands of deaths and injuries, between soldiers and civilians, in both territories.
