This Monday, the Minister of Justice promised “maximum speed” in analyzing the application for Portuguese nationality by an Israeli hostage of the Islamist movement Hamas, emphasizing that “exceptional situations deserve exceptional decisions”.
“Exceptional situations deserve exceptional decisions. We are currently assessing the situation as quickly as possible so that we can respond,” said Catarina Sarmento e Castro, when questioned by the media on the sidelines of the signing of a protocol with the Red Cross in Ponta Delgada, Azores.
Without describing the case in detail, the government official emphasized that it is the “signature of the Ministry of Justice” to protect “the fundamental rights” of citizens.
At issue is a report by the Público newspaper on the request for the nationality of an Israeli citizen held hostage by Hamas.
To the Lusa agency, The Ministry of Justice said in a written response that it is “analyzing this request with due urgency, in close coordination with other areas of government, namely Foreign Affairs, taking into account the context on the ground.”
In its response, the ministry recalls that “any request for nationality involves consultation with several entities”.
The Islamist group Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel on October 7 with the launch of thousands of rockets and the raid of armed militiamen, who took two hundred hostages.
In response, Israel declared war on Hamas, a movement that has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007 and has been classified as terrorist by the European Union and the United States. Israel bombed several of the group’s infrastructures in the Gaza Strip and imposed a total siege. the area with an interruption of the supply of water, fuel and electricity.
The conflict has already caused thousands of deaths and injuries in both areas, among military personnel and civilians.
