Some 20,000 people were forced to leave their homes in southern Lebanon after attacks between the Shiite movement Hezbollah and Israeli forces, according to data published this Monday by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The IOM reports that, in recent weeks, incidents on the Lebanese border have been constant and that, as of Saturday, it had registered more than 19,600 displaced people. The organization that is part of the UN system stated that displacement is increasing at a rate of two thousand people per day.
In just one week, the number of displaced people on the Lebanon-Israel border has increased to around 14,000, but not only in the southern part of Lebanon, as some of the displaced are choosing to go to areas further north, like the country’s capital, Beirut.
The Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah (pro-Iran) has so far avoided opening a new formal war front against Israel, while the Lebanese army has so far not responded to any attack launched from across the border.
