“There is no will to implement a two-state solution, but we must move in that direction”

The former deputy secretary general of the UN, Víctor Ângelo, once again defends that the conflict between Israel and Hamas can only be resolved by adopting the two-state solution, but this is something that will take some time.

“On the part of Israel and on the part of other actors, including Hamas, there is no great desire to move towards a two-state solution, but we must move in that direction,” he reiterates.

Vítor Ângelo recalls that for 30 years the international community “has been trying to transform this idea into a reality.”

“It is essential that there be a viable Palestinian state, respected by Israel, and that alongside the Palestinian state there is an Israeli state that is also secure and that can coexist in peace with the Palestinian state. That is the solution, but I don’t see the next one.” once this solution is implemented,” he acknowledges.

Proof of this is the recent presentation of two resolutions in the United Nations Security Council. In the coming days a third resolution will be voted on that should suffer the same fate, considers Vítor Ângelo.

“This resolution will probably also suffer from the same thing as the others, that is, it will probably be voted on by Russia, especially because this resolution, which is quite extensive, has two very important defects: it does not talk about humanitarian corridors, it does not mention the need to establish these corridors and, on the other hand, and this is the second major defect of the American resolution that is about to be discussed, it does not mention humanitarian pauses, which are absolutely essential so that the work of humanitarians can be carried out,” he explains.

The Gaza Strip has been under an Israeli land, air and sea blockade since Hamas seized power in the territory of 2.3 million people in 2007.

Since October 9, two days after the start of the war with Hamas, Israel imposed a complete siege on the Gaza Strip and cut off water, electricity and food supplies.

The current war between Israel and Hamas was triggered by an unprecedented attack by the Islamist group’s commandos in Israeli territory on October 7, which left 1,400 dead.

In response, Israel has been bombing the Palestinian territory, with authorities reporting the deaths of some 4,700 people as a result of Israeli attacks.
