A Russian private military company hires women to fight in Ukraine

A private military company linked to the Russian Defense Ministry has started recruiting women to fight in Ukraine, the internet portal Bazhnie Istorii reported on Monday.

The advertisement published on the social network Vkontakte offers a six-month contract with a salary of 220,000 rubles (about $2,300).

If the fighter is injured, she will receive between one and three million rubles ($10,000 to $30,000), and in the event of her death, her family will receive five million rubles ($50,000).

The women, who will be considered war veterans at the end of the contract, must be familiar with the use of firearms, but will receive at least a month of training in the ‘Donetsk People’s Republic’, according to the announcement.

Two women, one a sniper and the other a doctor, publicly admitted to being part of Borz, a battalion commanded by Ukrainian-born Dmitry Zipir.

In March, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu reported that about 1,100 women were serving in the military in Ukraine, but did not indicate whether they had seen combat.

According to Russian defense figures, more than 39,000 women currently serve in the armed forces, of which almost 5,000 are officers.

When announcing the partial mobilization of 300,000 reservists, Russian President Vladimir Putin did not take women into account, who are also not obliged to perform military service in Russia.

Faced with the unpopularity of forced mobilization, the Kremlin chose to offer professional contracts to Russian citizens and immigrants, in their case, in exchange for citizenship.
