At least seven people died after a huge fog cloud caused a collision with 158 cars on a highway in the southern US state of Louisiana.
According to the North American press, cited by the AFP agency, the so-called “super fog” was caused by a combination of fire smoke and dense fog, causing a serious accident on Interstate 55, 48 kilometers from New Orleans.
Images released by local police show both lanes of the highway blocked by the cars involved in the accident, including some burned vehicles.
Police also said the collision caused a fire on the highway.
US authorities indicate that more than 25 people were taken to the hospital, not counting the victims who sought medical attention on their own.
According to the US Weather Service, “super fog” forms when “vapors and moisture released by organic materials such as bushes, leaves or trees mix with cooler, nearly saturated air.” The phenomenon can reduce visibility to less than three meters.
