More than a hundred large transnational companies want governments to respect “the objective” of a maximum increase in the global average temperature of 1.5 degrees Celsius in order to fight climate change.
The list of those companies includes Bayer, Volvo, Décathlon, Ikea, Nestlé, Danone, Heineken, eBay and Unilever.
These business conglomerates spoke out as the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, known as COP28, approaches.
“Our companies are suffering the effects and costs of the increase in extreme weather events due to climate change,” reads the statement signed by 131 companies that represent an annual turnover of almost one billion. [milhão de milhões] of dollars.
“We cannot make this transition safely and effectively alone. Financial institutions, fossil fuel producers and governments have a crucial role to play,” they said. In the text, they also defended that governments set objectives and a calendar for the progressive elimination of fossil fuels.
“As buyers and users of energy in the global system, we have an important role to play, sending a clear signal about our future use of energy,” also stated the subscribing companies, brought together in the ‘We Mean Business’ coalition.
