US suggests for the first time “humanitarian pauses” to bring aid to civilians in Gaza

The United States (USA) suggested this Tuesday, for the first time, “humanitarian pauses” in Gaza to deliver aid to civilians, although they did not corroborate the call for a ceasefire made shortly before by the Secretary General of the United Nations . Antonio Guterres.

These humanitarian pauses should serve to send “food, water, medicine and other essential elements” to Gaza “without benefiting Hamas or any other terrorist group,” argued US Secretary of State Antony Blinken before the Security Council.

Blinken’s request did not specifically include fuel, the entry of which was vetoed by Israel despite being a fundamental element for the operation of hospitals, since Israeli authorities argue that it could fall into the hands of the Islamist group Hamas.

To implement the humanitarian pauses, the United States has prepared a resolution that it will soon present to the Security Council, after this body has so far shown itself unable to agree on a resolution that puts an end – definitively or provisionally – to the war in Loop….

One of the resolutions already voted on – proposed by Brazil – precisely called for “humanitarian pauses” in Gaza, but was vetoed exclusively by the United States, which will now present a proposal with the same purpose.

Blinken said the new resolution unequivocally includes “Israel’s right to defend itself” within the “right of every nation to defend itself and prevent recurrence of attacks.”

“Where is the outrage? Where is the disgust? Where is the rejection? Where is the explicit condemnation of these horrors?” Blinken said after pointing out some of the atrocities committed by Hamas in its attack against Israel on the 7th. October.

“No member of this Council – no country in this chamber – could or would tolerate the massacre of its people,” Blinken said.

To his great ally Israel, Blinken reminded that “Palestinian civilians must be protected” and in this sense “Israel must take all precautions to avoid harming civilians,” although he assured that Hamas uses these civilians “as human shields.”

The head of US diplomacy also sent a series of messages to Iran to warn the country not to join the conflict: “If Iran or its allies expand the conflict and put more civilians at risk, they will be responsible for it,” he warned. .

“The United States is not seeking conflict with Iran. We do not want this war to expand. But if Iran or its proxies attack American personnel anywhere, make no mistake: We will defend our people, we will defend our security, quickly and decisively.” Blinken told the United Nations Security Council.

Finally, he stressed that only a two-state solution, one Israeli and the other Palestinian, could resolve this conflict in the long term.
