The lawyer who urged the government to urgently grant Portuguese nationality to Israeli Ofer Calderon, a hostage in the Gaza Strip, confirmed on Tuesday that the matter has been “resolved”.
“The problem is solved”José Ribeiro e Castro told the Lusa agency, confirming the information from the online edition of the Público newspaper that “the Central Register Office (CRC) has issued the birth certificate to Ofer Calderon, the Israeli citizen who applied for Portuguese nationality under Sephardic law in 2021”.
Without giving details, Ribeiro e Castro said it is enough for the CRC to issue a birth certificate for the Israeli to benefit from dual citizenship.
Ofer Calderon was kidnapped on October 7 during attacks by the Islamist group Hamas on Israel and taken to the Gaza Strip with two minor children.
The Lusa agency sought clarification from the Ministry of Justice on the process of granting nationality to Ofer Calderon under Sephardic law, after being informed that no information would be provided on the matter.
