At least three dead in Bangladesh after Cyclone Hamoon

Cyclone Hamoon, which hit the coasts of Bangladesh last night and caused the death of three people and the injury of seven others, weakened a few hours after entering this Asian country.

“So far we have received news of three deaths due to the impact of the cyclone, all in the Cox’s Bazar district. We are waiting for details and tallying the damage,” the head of Bangladesh’s Disaster Management Department told Efe this Wednesday. Mizanur Rahman.

One of the deaths occurred after a tree fell in Cox’s Bazaar.

The administrative head of Maheshkhali subdistrict in Cox’s Bazaar, Miky Marma, confirmed that at least seven people were injured after the cyclone hit.

In the latest bulletin, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) reduced the alert in four seaports due to the low probability of strong storms throughout the day.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Cyclone Hamoon has weakened into a “deep depression” in southeastern Bangladesh.

“It is very likely to move northeastwards and weaken further into a depression in the next six hours,” the IMD estimated.

Bangladeshi authorities are now assessing the damage, including house roofs, fallen trees and damaged electricity poles, mainly in the island areas of the Cox’s Bazaar district, where almost a million Rohingya refugees from neighboring Myanmar live.

The district was also left without power supply throughout the night after the cyclone hit, Marma added.

Bangladesh authorities said they had evacuated more than 110,000 people to different cyclone shelters, mainly in the southeastern districts of Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar.

Around 1.5 million people were planned to be evacuated.

This is the second cyclone to form this year in the Bay of Bengal, which bathes the southern coast of Bangladesh, after Cyclone Mocha that hit the country in May and destroyed thousands of homes.

The Bay of Bengal usually experiences cyclones between April and May, and between October and November. In May 2020, super cyclone Amphan caused more than a hundred deaths between Bangladesh and India, in one of the worst natural disasters of its kind in years.
