The UN denounces chaotic situation in the hospitals of the Gaza Strip

UN humanitarian agencies reported this Wednesday a chaotic situation in hospitals in the Gaza Strip, overcrowded with wounded and bodies piled up in tents.

Agency officials visited several hospitals in the Palestinian territory and described “unprecedented levels of devastation,” the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.

“In one of the hospitals, hundreds of injured men, women and children lie on beds, stretchers and on the floor, most of them unconscious, with open wounds,” OCHA said.

In the same unit, dozens of bodies were piled up in a tent outside, since the morgue was full, the UN office indicated in the report, according to the Spanish agency EFE.

In hospitals, “fuel is highly rationed, being used only for vital facilities, and many of the emergency generators are not designed to operate continuously, so they may break down,” OCHA warned.

The UN humanitarian agencies themselves admitted on Tuesday the possibility of having to suspend operations in the Gaza Strip starting today due to lack of fuel.

The Gaza Strip, with 2.3 million people, has been under bombardment by the Israeli army since the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas carried out an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7.

Israeli authorities said Hamas killed more than 1,400 people in Israel, while the Islamist group reported more than 5,800 deaths in Gaza.

Hamas, considered a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States and the European Union, has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007.

In the report released in the Swiss city of Geneva, the UN also noted that the lack of food puts many children and women, especially pregnant and lactating women, at risk of malnutrition.
