“We perfectly understand and follow the position of António Guterres, who was unequivocal when he condemned Hamas terrorism, which is absolutely unacceptable. He was absolutely clear in the analysis he made,” João Gomes Cravinho told Lusa, who regretted this controversy among the Government of Israel and the Secretary General of the UN.
For the Portuguese Government, “it cannot be said that António Guterres is in any way excusing terrorism.”
This, added the head of Portuguese diplomacy, “is an absolute error that cannot go unnoticed.”
Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Gilad Erdan, asked this Tuesday the secretary general of the organization, António Guterres, to resign “immediately” after stating that the attacks by the Islamist group Hamas “did not happen the nothing”.

Moments earlier, at the opening of a UN Security Council meeting dedicated to the current situation in the Middle East, Guterres unequivocally condemned the “unprecedented” “acts of terror” on October 7 perpetrated by the Islamist group Hamas in Israel , stressing that “nothing can justify the deliberate murder, attack and kidnapping of civilians.”
Regarding the resignation presented by Tel Aviv, the Portuguese minister refused to “value it excessively.”
